Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

An out-pouching in the lower abdomen is often the result of both excess skin and underlying fat as well as stretching and laxity of the underlying stomach muscles (rectus abdominis) brought about by pregnancy, weight fluctuations and aging. This operation removes the sagging lower abdominal skin, stretch marks, any scars (from cesarean section, hysterectomy or appendectomy), corrects an abdominal hernia, if one exists and tightens the underlying muscles -  resulting in a flatter, more toned appearance.
The best candidates for abdominoplasty are men or women who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by a large fat deposit and, or loose abdominal skin that won't improve with proper diet or exercise.  The surgery is particularly helpful in women who, with multiple pregnancies, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal.  The operation should be postponed in patients who intend either to lose a lot of weight and in women who plan future pregnancies. A subsequent pregnancy will separate the abdominal muscles and undo the surgery.  The operation should not be done in smokers.  The rates of serious complications in both active and passive smokers are significant.
The procedure uses an incision in the lower abdomen, hidden within what is sometimes called the "bikini line". Excess tummy fat and skin are pulled down and removed and a new navel is created. The underlying muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened resulting in a much flatter tummy as well as a narrower waistline. The procedure takes 3 - 5 hours or longer depending on the amount of skin and tissue to be removed. The operation may be done as a team effort with another procedure (i.e. a gynecologist doing a hysterectomy or bladder suspension).  Most Plastic surgeons prefer to do this operation with general anesthesia, so you'll sleep comfortably through the operation.
Temporary pain is relieved with pain medication pills. You should expect swelling, soreness, and numbness of abdominal skin, bruising or redness for several weeks. Major complications bleeding, blood clots, infection, poor healing resulting in a conspicuous scar, small area of numbness in midline just above the scar, or need for a second revisionary operation. However, they are unusual. Back to work: average 2 - 4 weeks. More strenuous activity: average 4 - 6 weeks or more.
Abdominoplasty produces excellent results in patients with weakened and, or separated abdominal muscles or those with excess tummy skin. The results are long lasting if you follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly and do not become pregnant. The positive transformation is immediate and our patients LOVE it ! As regards the current cost of abdominoplasty, our fees are extremely competitive, not only within our own metropolitan Memphis area, but also in comparison with fees charged elsewhere in the United States.
